How To Win Against Memory Loss

Amnesia Home

No matter how Hollywood tends to exploit amnesia, which is a condition of memory loss, don’t forget that this is a serious condition that thousands have suffered from. Amnesia is a state of mind where the memory is disturbed. This condition can happen for a number of reasons and has affected the lives of families all over the world.

Amnesia can be caused organically, meaning that something happened to the brain, like trauma from a car accident or the brain deteriorating from a disease. This type of amnesia is the effect to a cause- if there was damage done to the brain, it may not be able to reach those memories and process them for the person to remember. The other cause of amnesia is a functional amnesia. Functional amnesia is the result of psychological factors or defense mechanisms that force the brain not to remember certain events or moments.

Amnesia in its simplicity is a state where the mind cannot pull upon memories. Amnesia can be permanent or sporadic like transient global amnesia that only lasts for 24 hours. Amnesia also can affect either short term or long-term memories. For instance if someone has short-term memory loss from amnesia, they may not remember where they were yesterday, but they would be able to remember the exact address of the house they grew up in.

Other types of amnesia include symptoms of very short-term memory loss, or the inability to transfer short term memory to long term memory. Traumatic amnesia occurs when there has been some kind of head trauma, while other amnesia can be the result of long-term alcoholism or even short term memory loss from a night of excessive drinking. All of us suffer from some kind of childhood amnesia, where we can’t remember what it was like when we were babies. This phenomenon has had many different opinions from professionals like Freud who attributes this amnesia to sexual repression, while others debate that the brain is not developed fully enough at this stage to remember.

There is no cure for amnesia. Many say that time is the only thing that can heal amnesia. The specialists are coming up with ways to stimulate the memories through pictures, places, loved ones, but no one has found an absolute cure for this unfortunate condition.
