How To Win Against Memory Loss

Dissociative Amnesia

Dissociative Amnesia is a condition where a person is not able to recall memories or information associated with a stressful or traumatic period in their life. This type of amnesia does not occur from someone enduring trauma to their head, but instead it is developed usually after some trauma to their lives, whether it be a bad relationship or bouts of severe depression. Many times those suffering from Dissociative Amnesia will be able to recall general information, but not any personal information.

Causes of Dissociative Amnesia include events that could be emotionally traumatizing to the individual. They may have witnessed or endured physical or sexual abuse, combat, a natural disaster, death of a loved one or intense internal conflict. Many believe that some people are predisposed to Dissociative Amnesia and that under a given state of stress they are prone to the disease.

There is more than one type of dissociative amnesia. There are other subtypes that include selective amnesia where a person can only recall certain parts of an event that took place over a specific amount of time or continuous amnesia where a person can not remember any events from one specific place in time to another.

With Dissociative Amnesia people can also experience complete loss of amnesia where the amnesia encompasses their entire life, which is called, generalized amnesia. Systematised Amnesia is another type of Dissociative Amnesia where the victim loses memory of a specific category of information, for instance the person suffering from Systematised amnesia may be able to remember everyone except for their mother.

Dissociative Amnesia is a condition that affects not only the person who cannot remember parts of their lives, but also the people in their lives who want to help. There are treatments to help stimulate the memories, but there is no exact cure for Dissociative Amnesia. If you feel that you or someone you know may be suffering from Dissociative Amnesia consult a doctor as quickly as possible.
